Centralized Application & Device Management for Industrial Operations

Securely deliver the right applications and data to the right user, device, and location at scale.

ThinManager, from Rockwell Automation, is the industry standard for centralized management of plant floor visualization, thin clients, and mobile delivery, often described as the “operating system of the plant floor.” It unifies device, user, and content administration so you can reduce downtime, strengthen security, and simplify OT/IT operations across one site or many.

ThinManager

Why ThinManager?

Purpose-built for industrial environments

ThinManager centralizes control over applications and visualization resources for diskless thin clients, PCs, and mobile devices, helping teams run securely and efficiently no matter the number of terminals or facilities.

Reduce downtime, increase productivity

By delivering applications from a central platform and managing users, events, and locations in one place, ThinManager cuts admin effort and speeds recovery from issues.

Strengthen security with role and directory based access

Tight Active Directory integration and policy driven controls ensure users only see the content they should improving governance without adding friction.

Scale from a single line to multi-site operations

ThinManager was designed to manage devices, content, and visualization across environments of any size supporting centralized configuration, redundancy options, and multi-monitor/virtual screens.

Key Capabilities

1) Centralized Application Delivery & Visualization

Deliver HMI, SCADA, web apps, camera feeds, and virtual desktops from terminal servers or VMs to any ThinManager managed device, then combine them into a single “pane of glass” using Virtual Screens and Multi Session tiling.

2) Device, User & Location Management

Manage thin clients, industrial PCs, and mobile devices from a single console; associate content with users and locations so applications follow the operator to the correct terminal or area on login or physical presence.

3) Industrial Mobility (Location Based Delivery)

Built-in mobile capabilities (formerly Relevance®) provide user based, location aware content delivery across iOS, Android, and Windows so operators get the right screens at the right place and time.

4) Security & Governance

Benefit from centralized authentication, session control, terminal shadowing, and directory synced permissions, with options for redundancy and “always on” availability to lower risk and total cost of ownership.

5) Broad Hardware Flexibility

Use ThinManager Ready terminals, PXE-boot thin clients, or software clients (WinTMC / iTMC / aTMC) plus an extensive ecosystem of tested devices and vendor partners.

How ThinManager Works

Host & Aggregate Content

Applications run centrally (e.g., on RDS/terminal servers, VMs, or camera streams). ThinManager treats these sources as Display Servers and can present several at once to a single terminal.

Render & Orchestrate to Any Endpoint

Endpoints (thin clients, PCs, tablets, wearables) receive the right content via policies, user logins, and location resolvers with support for up to 25 tiled sessions per screen when needed.

Administer from One Console

Admins configure devices, users, locations, events, and multi-monitor layouts centrally reducing touchpoints and improving visibility across operations.

Industrial Mobility “Right person, right place, right time.”

ThinManager’s location aware mobility delivers or withholds content based on a user’s physical position (QR, Bluetooth beacons, GPS, WiFi), enabling safe roaming HMIs, maintenance views at the asset, and role based workflows on the move.

Deployment & Compatibility

Client Options: ThinManager Ready BIOS devices, PXE-boot “Compatible” thin clients, or software clients for Windows/iOS/Android.

Protocols & Sources: RDP, VNC, and streaming protocols (e.g., RTSP) for cameras and remote desktops.

Scale Guidelines: Example guidance includes up to 400 managed terminals per deployment (recommended), 25 sessions per screen (tiling), and expanded multi-monitor support in recent versions. Always validate architecture to your workload.

What’s Current

  • ThinManager 14.1 (May 9, 2025) introduced updates such as improved certificate management, API enhancements, and new container options (including FactoryTalk Optix container image support), followed by service packs in November 2025.
  • Regular release cadence: service packs targeted for Feb/Jun/Oct, firmware/container updates roughly every two months helping sites stay secure and up to date.

Benefits for Operations & OT/IT

Lower TCO & Faster Rollouts through centralized configuration, redundancy options, and reduced endpoint maintenance.

Higher Uptime via quick terminal replacement, session portability, and centralized troubleshooting.

Security by Design with directory integration, policy based access, and location aware delivery to limit information to where it’s needed.

Mobility that Works in Industry deliver HMIs, KPIs, and procedures safely to tablets, phones, and wearables.
